Abstract

Enterprises are economical institutions by its nature, as well as being social institutions. In developed societies, enterprises should balance the negative results of their actions with the occasionally conflicting responsibility of its owner and/or shareholders, while measuring the social effects of its actions. Social responsibility serves as the stabilizing force at this point. Enterprises should balance economical, ethical and social performances. Yet, enterprises are being evaluated by their contribution to the society besides their economical success. In the 21stcentury, the society demands enterprises to take into consideration the social issues as part of their strategies. In this context, enterprises are allocating some of their resources to social responsibility. Although having a diverse set of dimensions, enterprises are mostly selecting the strategic dimension of social responsibility. In spite of defining the social actions they support as “social welfare oriented responsibilities”, they have tendency towards the strategic social responsibility since it creates mutual benefit between the enterprise and the society. In this paper, we have tried to explain that the social responsibility possesses a strategic dimension, along with its ethical and altruistic dimensions
