Abstract

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical features, treatment and long-term outcomes of patients diagnosed with acquired demyelinating syndromes. Method: This study was conducted on children who where followed up in the Outpatient Clinics of Pediatric Neurology with the diagnosis of acquired demyelinating syndromes from January 2014 to January 2018. The data about demographic features, clinical findings, and follow-up outcomes of the patients were scanned from patient files, and evaluated. Results: Nine out of 19 patients (47%) were girls and ten (53%) were boys. Their mean age was 10±5 years. The patients (37%) had acute disseminated encephalomyelitis/multiphasic disseminated encephalomyelitis, (n=7: 37%), five patients (26%) had multiple sclerosis (n=5: 26%), optic neuritis (n=3: 16%) had, three patients (16%) had transverse myelitis (n=3: 16%), and neuromyelitis optica (n=1: 5%) Seven patients (37%) had experienced infection within 1 month before onset. Although the outcome for most of the patients was good, one patient who was diagnosed with optic neuritis had findings of neurologic sequelae. Conclusion: Incidence of childhood acquired demyelinating syndrome, especially multiple sclerosis, is on the rise worldwide. Recognizing demyelinating syndromes carries important therapeutic and prognostic value.

Bulgular: On dokuz hastanın, dokuzu (%47) kız, 10’u (%53) erkek; ortalama yaşı 10±5 yıl idi. Hastaların yedisi (%37) ADEM/MDEM, beşi (%26) MS, üçü (%16) ON, üçü (%16) TM, biri (%5) NMO tanısı ile takipli idi. Yedi (%37) hastada akut demiyelinizan atak öncesi bir ay içinde enfeksiyon öyküsü vardı. Çoğu hastada izlem sonuçları iyi olsa da optik nörit tanısı alan bir hastanın sekel nörolojik bulgusu vardı. Sonuç: Çocukluk çağı edinsel demiyelinizan hastalık insidansı, özellikle multiple skleroz, dünya çapında artmaktadır. Demiyelinizan sendromların tanınması önemli terapötik ve prognostik değer taşır
