Abstract

This study focuses on the Short Story of the Antichrist, found at the end of the work War, Progress, and the End of History: Three Conversations, written by the Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov and published shortly before his death. The primary factor behind this choice is the evaluation of this work as a product of a sharp transformation, reflecting Solovyov’s departure from the ideal of theocracy, comprising the unity of humanity with the Messiah and the union of churches, which had dominated nearly all of his philosophical creativity, and the period of disillusionment he fell into at the end of his life. Therefore, in our study, the process that constitutes this general acceptance and the Short Story of the Antichrist are thoroughly analyzed, and a conclusion is drawn on this general acceptance using a critical and descriptive method towards the author. Solovyov was disillusioned by the reality of Russia, a reality that did not coincide with his universal ideals, and by the phenomena he personally experienced, including an encounter with the devil and the intuition of impending death. However, it is important to distinguish between two different aspects when associating this with the Short Story of the Antichrist. Solovyov’s Story of the Antichrist aligns with what researchers refer to as the third period of his creativity, marked by disillusionment and the abandonment of past ideals, beginning with destruction based on the Mongol yoke for Europe and Russia. Nonetheless, attention must be paid to how the story conveys the development and eventual downfall of the Antichrist’s reign. In this context, our study concludes that Solovyov sought to highlight not the power of the Antichrist’s kingdom but its falseness and inevitable downfall, arguing that, in harmony with all his philosophical views, he delivered his final word on the Messiah.
