Abstract

This paper presents a qualitative content analysis of recent scholarship on the American Dream, examining how structural barriers to its realization are framed across legal, economic, sociological, political, historical, and literary perspectives. Following Hsieh and Shannon’s (2005) conventional approach to qualitative content analysis, the study codes twenty-five scholarly works for the structural barriers they identify, the populations they focus on, and the ways these barriers interact across the literature. The selected works were located through targeted searches and citation tracking, and then analysed inductively to identify recurring patterns and comparative silences. The findings reveal that legal status, race, homeownership, and intergenerational mobility receive the most analytical attention, while the civic-democratic dimension and political voice are comparatively underrepresented. The barriers rarely appear in isolation, intersecting most visibly between race and housing, geography and class, and legal status and belonging. The analysis shows that the American Dream should not be regarded merely as a national ideal relating to success or individual achievement. Rather, it should be understood through the tension between its promise of opportunity and its unequal realization across different groups and historical contexts. The study contributes by bringing legal, economic, sociological, political, historical, and literary works into dialogue through a common analytical frame. It presents the American Dream not as an individual path but as a condition shaped by the structures through which it is pursued, limited, and contested in contemporary scholarship on inequality, belonging, citizenship, cultural memory, and access to opportunity in America today.
