Abstract

Understanding the demographic foundations of civil society has importance in explaining the dynamics of social organization. In this study, it is aimed to contribute to the determination of demographic foundations of civil society organization in Turkey. For this purpose, the relationships between demographic structure and the level of associational organization were analyzed at the NUTS 3 level. The analysis was based on population per association and 34 demographic variables for 81 provinces. Civil society organization was defined by the number of associations per 100,000 population. The normality of the data was tested with Skewness–Kurtosis and Shapiro–Wilk tests. Since the normality assumption could not be provided in most of the variables, Spearman's rho and Kendall's tau-b correlation methods were used in the analyses. The findings show that there are significant relationships between the level of associational organization and demographic structure. Significant relationships were identified between associational organization and age structure, educational level, and marital status. It was concluded that as the level of association increased, the proportion of the child population decreased, while the proportions of the adult and elderly populations increased. In addition, it was observed that as the average years of education and the proportion of secondary and higher education graduates increased, and the proportion of primary school graduates decreased, the level of associational organization also increased. It was identified that the increase in associational organization was related to the increase in the proportion of widowed and divorced individuals and the decrease in the proportion of never-married individuals. The findings support the demographic relationships between civil society organization and modernization suggested in the literature.
