Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine how the most read femicide news on the Google News platform in Turkey in 2024 is represented in the media and to determine the ethical problems that arise in the presentation of violence against women in internet news. In this direction, the language used in the news, visual content and the ways of presenting the perpetrator and the victim are evaluated in the context of media ethics and gender equality, and it has been revealed how femicides are conveyed through the media and to what extent they are in accordance with the principles of ethical journalism. The research is looking for an answer to the question of how the use of title and language, the way the perpetrator and the victim is presented, the transmission of criminal instruments, the quality of visual content and the level of compliance of the news with the principles of media ethics shape the representation of femicides in the most widely read femicide news on the Google News platform in 2024. The mixed method was adopted in the research and the news was examined using quantitative and qualitative content analysis techniques together. During the analysis process, the news were systematically evaluated in line with pre-determined coding categories such as the use of title and language, the presentation of the perpetrator and the victim, the transfer of criminal instruments, the nature of visual content and the level of compliance with ethical principles. The sample of the research consists of 34 internet news selected by random sampling method among the most read femicide news on the Google News platform in Turkey in 2024. As a result of the research, it was determined that although the media has the potential to make violence against women visible and create social awareness, it cannot use this power sufficiently in line with the solution-oriented and ethical journalism understanding. In the examined news, it has been seen that femicides are mostly presented with a perpetrator-centered and dramatizing narrative, while the victim-oriented and rights-based journalism approach remains in the background. Bu çalışmanın amacı, 2024 yılı içerisinde Türkiye'de Google News platformunda en çok okunan kadın cinayeti haberlerinin medyada nasıl temsil edildiğini incelemek ve internet haberlerinde kadınlara yönelik şiddetin sunumunda ortaya çıkan etik sorunları belirlemektir. Bu doğrultuda, haberlerde kullanılan dil, görsel içerikler ile fail ve mağdurun sunuluş biçimleri medya etiği ve toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliği bağlamında değerlendirilerek kadın cinayetlerinin medya aracılığıyla nasıl aktarıldığı ve etik habercilik ilkelerine ne ölçüde uygun olduğu ortaya konulmuştur. Araştırma, 2024 yılı içerisinde Google News platformunda en çok okunan kadın cinayeti haberlerinde başlık ve dil kullanımının, fail ve mağdurun sunuluş biçiminin, suç aletlerinin aktarımının, görsel içeriklerin niteliğinin ve haberlerin medya etiği ilkelerine uygunluk düzeyinin kadın cinayetlerinin temsilini nasıl şekillendirdiği sorusuna yanıt aramaktadır. Araştırmada karma yöntem benimsenmiş olup haberler nicel ve nitel içerik analizi teknikleri birlikte kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Analiz sürecinde haberler; başlık ve dil kullanımı, fail ve mağdurun sunuluş biçimi, suç aletlerinin aktarımı, görsel içeriklerin niteliği ve etik ilkelere uygunluk düzeyi gibi önceden belirlenen kodlama kategorileri doğrultusunda sistematik olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmanın örneklemini, 2024 yılı içerisinde Türkiye'de Google News platformunda en çok okunan kadın cinayeti haberleri arasından rassal örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilen 34 internet haberi oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma sonucunda, medyanın kadına yönelik şiddeti görünür kılma ve toplumsal farkındalık oluşturma potansiyeline sahip olmasına rağmen bu gücü çözüm odaklı ve etik habercilik anlayışı doğrultusunda yeterince kullanamadığı belirlenmiştir. İncelenen haberlerde kadın cinayetlerinin çoğunlukla fail merkezli ve dramatize edici bir anlatımla sunulduğu, mağdur odaklı ve hak temelli habercilik yaklaşımının ise geri planda kaldığı görülmüştür. Elde edilen bulgular, kadın cinayeti haberlerinde medya etiği ilkelerine daha fazla önem verilmesi gerektiğini ortaya koyarken, medyanın toplumsal sorumluluğunun güçlendirilmesi, kadın güvenliğine yönelik farkındalığın artırılması ve kadına yönelik şiddetin önlenmesine yönelik politika geliştirme süreçlerine katkı sağlayacak etik habercilik anlayışının önemini vurgulamaktadır.
