Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived stress and emotional eating behavior in adolescents and to identify various factors that influence emotional eating behavior. Materials and Methods: The sample for this study, designed as a descriptive and correlational research, consisted of 346 adolescents attending high schools in a province in Turkey’s Central Anatolia Region. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Sociodemographic Data Form, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ-TR). The IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 29.0 software was used to analyze the data. Results: 60.7% of the adolescents were girls, with a mean age of 16.11 ± 0.89 years. Female adolescents had significantly higher scores for perceived stress and emotional eating (p < 0.05). Adolescents who perceived themselves as overweight and were dissatisfied with their weight had higher emotional eating scores (p<0.001 and p=0.004, respectively). A weak positive correlation was found between perceived stress and emotional eating (r=0.223; p<0.001). In the multiple linear regression analysis, the model was found to be significant (F=10.577; p<0.001; AdjR²=0.100), and gender, weight perception, and perceived stress were identified as significant predictors of emotional eating. Conclusion: A significant and positive association has been found between perceived stress and emotional eating among adolescents. Female gender, a negative body image, and high levels of perceived stress are significant predictors of emotional eating. Accordingly, school health services should plan initiatives that support stress management and healthy coping skills.

Verilerin analizinde IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 29.0 programı kullanılmıştır.
