Abstract

This article investigates the construction, demolition, and subsequent reconstruction efforts surrounding the bell tower commissioned by Kaptan Yorgi Pasha, who served as Giresun’s mayor from 1885 to 1904. Originally erected under his patronage, the tower was demolished in the early twentieth century, then rebuilt in 2016—only to be torn down again in 2019 and replaced with a tile-clad clock tower adorned with hazelnut motifs in 2021. Adopting the concept of the palimpsest, the article traces the tower’s layered history, analyzing how it was initially woven into and later erased from Giresun’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious urban landscape. While the 2016 reconstruction echoed the architectural features of the original, it stood in a cultural context that no longer resonated with its former significance. The subsequent replacement in 2021, with the hazelnut-themed clock tower effectively effaced the collective memory of Kaptan Yorgi Pasha, an influential figure in the city’s recent history. Through the lens of the palimpsest—a metaphor borrowed from literary studies and increasingly relevant in urban scholarship—the article uncovers cycles of construction, erasure, and rebuilding and reflects on how these processes shape how Giresun’s urban past is remembered and commemorated. It also addresses the nonlinear, temporal complexities of urban transformation and questions the capacity of such mutable monuments to embody and represent the city’s memory meaningfully.
