Abstract
Turkish sociology, with a history spanning over a century, has faced various difficulties and obstacles in its path to establishing an institutional identity. This study aims to examine the structural, epistemological, methodological, and institutional issues of the sociology discipline in Turkey from its inception to the present within a comprehensive self-critical framework. The limited presence of original studies that address the structural problems of Turkish sociology from a comprehensive and relational perspective constitutes the primary significance and unique contribution of this research. Instead of focusing on isolated issues, the work aims to systematically reveal the interconnections among these problems. A comprehensive literature review was adopted as the method for this research. The structural problems of Turkish sociology were analyzed thematically, based on critical evaluations and self-criticism texts written by Turkish sociologists. This approach can be described as an effort to do “the sociology of sociology” from within the discipline. The study discusses the problems of Turkish sociology along five main axes: Western centrism and transferism, theoretical production stagnation and methodological chaos, segmentation and lack of communication within academia, political pressures, and ideological dependence, as well as institutional, educational, and professional employment crises. The analysis shows that these problems form a mutually reinforcing and sustaining structural pattern. The political mission-laden identity during the establishment of sociology in Turkey laid the groundwork for subsequent issues, including transferism, segmentation, amnesia, and institutional crises. As a result of the study, it is emphasized that these problems are not permanent and that Turkish sociology possesses the intellectual capacity to problematize its own limitations.
