Abstract
Examining literary works through the data of different disciplines helps revealing the richness of these works. In this study, Yaşar Kemal’s novel Yer Demir Gök Bakır (1963) was analyzed in terms of sociologist Jean-Gabriel de Tarde’s “imitation theory.” One of the important sociologists of the nineteenth century, Tarde (1843-1904), argued that imitation was the phenomenon that constituted society and that various forms of repetition lay at the foundation of everything. According to him, every individual imitates others if they do not come up with an invention on their own. Imitation follows a path from the top down and the inside out. Children imitate their parents, and subordinates imitate their superiors. That imitation is one of the phenomena that changed and transforms the lives of the people in Yalak village in Yer Demir Gök Bakır is one of the results of this study. Each act of imitation unites them and brings them together in a shared emotional experience. One of the most important findings of the study is that the wise elder of the village, Meryemce, for whom all the villagers have respect and love, is imitated only by women and children. The fact that men do not imitate any of her actions is related to the patriarchal order and the role assigned to women in society. Another finding is that, in the novel as well, imitation takes place from top to bottom, and that children imitate adults and subordinates imitate their superiors. However, the novel also depicts instances where a superior imitates a subordinate. Thus, it has been established that the act of imitation is not one-sided.
Özet
Edebi eserlerin farklı disiplinlerin verileriyle incelenmesi bu eserlerdeki zenginliği ortaya çıkarmaya imkân vermektedir. Bu çalışmada, Yaşar Kemal’in Yer Demir Gök Bakır (1963) romanı, sosyolog Jean-Gabriel de Tarde’ın “taklit kuramı” açısından incelenmiştir. On dokuzuncu yüzyılın önemli sosyologlarından Tarde (1843-1904), toplumu meydana getiren olgunun taklit olduğunu ve her şeyin temelinde çeşitli tekrar biçimleri olduğunu öne sürmüştür.
