Abstract
Although there are poets who wrote poetry in accordance with the tradition of Classical Turkish literature, their literary works have not yet been brought to light. One of these poets is Mustafa Resmî Efendi, an eighteenth-century poet. The main text of this study is Mustafa Resmî Efendi’s “pen qasida” (kalem kasidesi), which concerns the praise of the pen and the praised patron (memdûh). Written under the pen name Resmî, this qasida is the only identified literary work of the poet. Recorded under the inventory numbers 706654 and 706655 in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums and preserved in a single manuscript copy, the qasida was transliterated into the Latin alphabet and subsequently translated into contemporary Turkish. In order to examine the pen qasida in accordance with its context and the stylistic characteristics of its period, information is provided on the life of Mustafa Resmî Efendi and on pen qasidas. The pen qasida, in which descriptions are extensively employed, is analysed through the method of classical textual commentary. In the qasida, which is examined in terms of form and meaning, particular attention is paid to the contribution of the figure of the pen to the depth of imagery and meaning, the praise of the memdûh, and the understanding of the poet’s purpose. In addition to such characteristics as facilitating the discovery of secrets and conveying one’s intentions to higher authorities, the pen is also represented as a beautiful face and as a beloved. The state of need is one of the motives supporting the artistic production of the poet, who is portrayed as a seeker of pearls in the sea of meaning. The memdûh, associated with the sea on account of his generosity and with the science of alchemy because of his ability to exercise power over fate, is likewise idealized within the context of the poet’s purpose and aspiration. Making a direct contribution to the literature on kalemiye and panegyric poetry, this study also offers original contributions to the field in terms of textual publication and research on poets.
