Abstract

In this study, selected morphological characteristics and elytral spot features of adult individuals of the citrus longhorned beetle, Anoplophora chinensis (Forster, 1771) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), from Istanbul and Antalya populations were compared. A total of 74 individuals were examined, of which 40 were collected from Antalya and 34 from Istanbul. Specimens were hand-collected the trunks and root collar areas of Acer spp. in Istanbul in 2015-2016 and Platanus orientalis in Antalya in 2023-2024. Morphological measurements included body width, body length, elytral length, and antennal length. According to the results of the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), significant differences between populations were detected in terms of body length and elytral length (p<0.05) , whereas no significant differences were found for body width and antennal length (p>0.05) . Sex was found to have a significant effect on selected morphological traits (p<0.05) . The number of elytral spots was analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test. While no significant difference was found between populations in terms of the total number of spots (p>0.05) , differences were observed in spot shape (p<0.05) . Circular spots were more prevalent in the Antalya population, whereas irregular spots were more common in the Istanbul population. No significant differences were detected between sexes in terms of spot number (p>0.05) . Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that the first two components explained 80.60% of the total variance, indicating that morphological variation among individuals was largely associated with body size and spot number. No clear separation between populations was observed in the PCA plot. The findings indicate that there is limited morphological differentiation between A. chinensis populations, although variation in spot shape exists, and the species exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism.
