Abstract

Cultural heritages are an important bond between the past and the future, but they are in danger of destruction and extinction due to various reasons. Therefore, documentation of cultural heritage is important. In this context, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and laser scanning technology come to the fore. In this study, the Taşhan historical structure in Malatya Hekimhan was modeled in 3D using a handheld laser scanner and a UAV, and the accuracy was assessed by comparing the methods used. In conclusion, the position error obtained in Agisoft Metashape Professional software, which processes UAV data, was ±3.11 cm, and the height error was ±3.48 cm, while the position error obtained in GoPost software, which processes laser scanning data, was ±2.01 cm, and the height error was ±3.02 cm. The process took 6 hours and 11 minutes using Agisoft Metashape Professional software, and 3 hours and 15 minutes using GoPost software. In conclusion, when evaluating the device-software workflows used in this study on the historical structure of Taşhan, it was observed that the handheld laser scanning method yielded more practical and accurate results compared to the UAV method.
