Abstract

UV-curable photopolymer resins are widely used for decorative coatings and additive manufacturing due to their solvent-free, rapid curing. This study investigates the valorization of chestnut shell waste (CSW) as a sustainable lignocellulosic filler in a plant-based UV resin for non-load-bearing applications. Composite specimens with 1, 5, and 10wt.% CSW were prepared and cured at 405 nm for 10 minutes. Tensile and water absorption tests revealed that increasing CSW content reduced tensile strength and elongation due to particle agglomeration and limited UV penetration. Higher filler loading also increased water absorption because of the hydrophilic nature of the lignocellulose. Results indicate that 0–5wt.% CSW provides an optimal balance of mechanical integrity and moisture resistance for sustainable engineering products.
