Abstract
In this study, the effects of different abrasive materials used after the casting process on the surface quality and properties of components were investigated. Post-casting surface cleaning operations are of great importance in terms of removing surface defects, improving surface roughness, and enhancing the functional performance of components. Within this scope, cast specimens were subjected to various abrasive treatments, and the resulting surface characteristics were evaluated in terms of roughness, microstructure, hardness, and possible surface damage. Conventional shot blasting (using steel shots), deburring, Krom-X, walnut shell, glass powder, and alumina blasting methods were employed in the study. EN–GJS–400–18 grade ferritic ductile irons were produced using the conventional sand casting method. During the casting process, Ca–Si-based inoculant was added at two different ratios (0.1% and 0.2%). The effect of different inoculation amounts on microstructural characteristics, hardness, and the surface quality of the components was also investigated. According to the experimental results, the type of abrasive media has a significant influence on both surface roughness and mechanical properties. The surface roughness values measured for the half-inoculation are lower than those obtained for the full inoculation. Specimens subjected to 1 h deburring with walnut shell media followed by 12 h polishing with Krom-X exhibit both the lowest surface roughness (3–4 μm) and the lowest hardness values (157–160 HB). In contrast, samples processed through the combined deburring + polishing + drying sequence demonstrate the highest hardness value (188 HB), whereas specimens treated by conventional steel shot blasting show the highest surface roughness (8–9 μm).
