Abstract

This study discusses the managerial transformation from Taylorism to digital Taylorism from a historical, sociological, ethical perspective, focusing on how mechanisms of supervision, measurement, standardization, and control in modern organizations are reconfigured in digital age. Literatures on Taylorism, algorithmic management, electronic surveillance, surveillance society, and surveillance capitalism are examined together the relationship of digital Taylorism with the concepts of digital management, algorithmic management, and electronic surveillance is conceptually distinguished. Accordingly, digital Taylorism is understood as the reorganization of classical Taylorist principles through algorithms, sensors, software analytics, platform infrastructures, and automated decision-making systems within a data-driven managerial logic. The literature synthesis suggests that this transformation may have the potential to enhance efficiency, coordination, and predictability however, depending on the sectoral context of implementation, monitoring intensity, level of algorithmic transparency, and how employees experience the system, it may also create pressures on autonomy, privacy, psychosocial well-being, and perceptions of justice. The study argues that digitalized management does not eliminate the classical Taylorist logic of discipline rather, it reorganizes this logic through data rationality in more continuous, more widespread, and often more opaque forms. This study aims to make a conceptual contribution to the literature by positioning Digital Taylorism as a specific managerial logic that is related to, yet not reducible to, digital management, algorithmic management, and electronic surveillance. Within this scope, the study develops a theoretical ground and conceptual propositions for future empirical research to test more clearly the relationships among perceptions of Digital Taylorism, electronic surveillance, algorithmic management intensity, and employee outcomes.
