Abstract

It is observed that human beings convey both positive and negative emotions through the medium of language, which serves as a vehicle for expressing the self and the environment. Extant research has established that the lexical density of concepts and expressions pertaining to negative emotions significantly exceeds that of positive ones. This study investigates loanwords within the Turkish Dictionary associated with "disgust"—a primary human emotion—and its sub-components, encompassing the conceptual fields of contempt, humiliation, disdain, loathing, hatred, dislike, and repulsion. While loanwords are generally viewed as a natural consequence of linguistic contact, the derogatory category is recognized as a secondary yet significant motivation for lexical borrowing. In this study, loanwords categorized as derogatory in the Turkish Dictionary are first classified thematically. Subsequently, the etymological origins of these words and their current usage in contemporary Turkish are examined. The thematic analysis reveals that derogatory terms in Turkish are predominantly clustered around categories such as religion, gender, physical appearance, intelligence, education, behavior, senescence, and illness. In conclusion, the findings indicate that Arabic is the primary source language for derogatory borrowings in Turkish, followed by Persian, Armenian, Greek, French, and English, respectively.
