Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to examine pre-service and in-service primary teachers’ the nature of science views and pseudoscience beliefs. This study was conducted using the descriptive research method, and 136 pre-service primary teachers and 172 primary teachers participated. The data were collected through the “Nature of Science Beliefs Scale” and the “Pseudoscience Belief Scale”. The results showed that both pre-service and in-service primary teachers’ views about the nature of science and their beliefs in pseudoscience were at the middle level. A significant difference was found between the participants’ scores on the nature of science beliefs scale and its sub-dimensions, and this difference was in favor of the pre-service primary teachers on all dimensions and on the scale in general. With respect to pseudoscience beliefs, although there were differences between the groups in certain dimensions, no significant difference was found on the scale in general. Consistent with the results obtained, such opportunities as continuous education and professional development should be provided for primary teachers and pre-service teachers to reach the expected level of nature of science views and pseudoscience beliefs and to keep their knowledge of them current.
