Abstract

This study aims to examine preservice preschool teachers’ pre-practicum expectations regarding classroom management, experiences during the practicum, the similarities and differences between their expectations and experiences, and their evaluations of the undergraduate education and guidance processes related to these experiences. Adopting a qualitative phenomenological design, the study involved 27 preservice teachers enrolled in the preschool education program at a state university who were taking the teaching practicum course. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings indicate that, prior to the practicum, preservice teachers tended to perceive classroom management as a teacher-controlled, easily manageable, and one-dimensional process; however, their practicum experiences transformed this perception into a more realistic, multidimensional, and relationship-based understanding. The results also show that undergraduate coursework often remained largely theoretical, whereas practice-based experiences played a more decisive role in developing preservice teachers’ awareness of and experience with classroom management. In addition, guidance provided by cooperating teachers and university supervisors supported preservice teachers’ classroom management practices; however, some preservice teachers expected more feedback, interactive guidance, and closer support throughout the practicum. Preservice teachers also encountered various challenges, such as gaining children’s attention, maintaining classroom order, and coping with problem behaviors. Finally, practicum experiences were found to influence preservice teachers’ self-evaluations of classroom management and their professional development.
