Abstract
The debate on dualism in social theory has constituted a fundamental tension since the founding of the discipline. In classical social theory, dualisms such as individual-society, agency-structure, and micro-macro were approached through a one-sided framework; in contemporary social theory, however, these concepts have come to be addressed through their reorganization across different analytical dimensions. This article is a theoretical review study that examines Derek Layder's theory of social domains, as presented in his book Understanding Social Theory, within this context. Layder's approach, structured around four social domains, illustrates how engagements with dualities have evolved toward reorganizing these conceptual pairs across different analytical dimensions. The article examines Layder's theory through its ontological, axiological, epistemological, and methodological dimensions, critically discussing the centralization of the psychobiographical subject and the strengthening of a micro-level orientation. Layder's systematic theorizing tendency is compared with the perspective of empirical immanence, which holds that theory construction should develop as immanent to the empirical process. This comparison is conducted through the approaches of Michel Foucault and Norbert Elias. The article's central argument is that the confrontation with dualities in social theory is not constituted at the level of methodological debate, but is continuously built within the process of investigating social reality.
