Abstract

Freud anticipated that there would be a universal tendency to resist his dream theory; nevertheless, he did not consider that dreams could carry meaning in various different ways. He limited the meaning of dreams to a single function: the representation of wishes. Freud stated that, due to censorship, only a very small minority of the elements of dream thoughts could be represented in dreams, and that this was possible through the operations applied by condensation—such as omission, displacement, and combination. In this context, according to Freud, a dream is not a faithful translation or a literal reflection of dream thoughts, but rather a highly incomplete and fragmented version of them. In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud emphasized that the process of condensation occurs most notably in relation to words and names. This paper aims to analyze a dream in which the effect of the condensation mechanism is considered to be particularly prominent.
