Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the historical development of narrative therapy together with its theoretical foundations and to evaluate the developmental trajectory of this approach in Türkiye. Based on the assumption that understandings of mental health have historically been shaped within social, cultural, and discursive contexts, the emergence of narrative therapy is addressed from a critical perspective. In this regard, the contributions of thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jerome Bruner, and Lev Vygotsky are examined within the framework of poststructuralist thought, social constructionism, and narrative theory. The theoretical and practical structure of narrative therapy, developed by Michael White and David Epston, is discussed in terms of its expansion over time beyond the boundaries of individual therapy toward community-based practices. In addition, the dissemination of the approach across different cultures and its emphasis on local knowledge throughout this process are evaluated. In this study, the development of narrative therapy in Türkiye is examined through academic studies, fields of practice, and works that have contributed to the local literature. The findings indicate that narrative therapy is a relatively new yet developing field in Türkiye and that it has become increasingly visible, particularly in recent years, through growing academic production and diversification of practice.
