Abstract

Abstract The Qur’an is a divine and heavenly book that encompasses the fundamental principles governing human life in both this world and the Hereafter. For the principles and values presented by this book to occupy a central place in human life, it is necessary that it be read attentively, correctly understood, and effectively applied by its addressees. This requirement calls upon individuals addressed by the Qur’an to employ their intellectual faculties at the highest level, to actively engage their abilities of reflection and reasoning, and to benefit from the divine discourse in the most comprehensive manner possible. In this respect, the Qur’an addresses human beings not as passive recipients but as thinking, questioning, and discerning beings capable of drawing lessons (ʿibrah), and thus adopts a mode of discourse that places intellect and contemplation at its core. The socio-cultural and economic structures of the Qur’an’s first addressees played a decisive role in shaping the manner in which the divine message was conveyed. Engaged in activities such as trade, animal husbandry, and travel, these communities maintained constant interaction with nature; particularly during trade journeys and travels under desert conditions, they benefited from practical knowledge such as navigation by the stars. Accordingly, the beings, events, and examples emphasized in the Qur’an were selected from elements familiar to the first addressees and closely connected to their daily lives. This aspect is significant in that it reveals the Qur’an’s pedagogical and methodological approach, which takes into account the characteristics of its audience. The subject of this study is the examination of the meanings, contexts, and intended messages of the verses mentioned in the Qur’an for the purpose of drawing lessons, within the specific framework of Sūrat al-Naḥl. The scope of the research is limited to the verses in Sūrat al-Naḥl that invite human beings to think, reflect, and derive admonition. A profound and holistic understanding of the Qur’anic verses necessitates a careful process of reflection and interpretation conducted through a systematic methodological approach. At times, the Qur’an directs human beings to observe the universe as a whole and to evaluate the order and harmony of creation from the perspective of admonition; at other times, it focuses attention on more specific and concrete examples, encouraging reflection on particular beings and phenomena. In this regard, the Qur’an presents a multilayered narrative style that aims to foster admonition on both general and particular levels. The insufficient in-depth treatment of the reasons, contexts, and semantic domains of the verses that call for admonition in the Qur’an constitutes both the problem and the significance of this study. Accordingly, the aim of the research is to analyze the verses presented in the Qur’an—particularly for people of reason—as means of reflection and sources of admonition within the context of Sūrat al-Naḥl, and to reveal their function in shaping human thought. Methodologically, the study draws upon both classical and modern tafsīr sources; the verses are analyzed through a holistic approach that takes into consideration the relationships between meaning, context, and purpose. In addition, the verbs that invite human beings to think, reflect, and draw lessons are examined under a separate heading, with attention to their Qur’anic usage and semantic fields. The findings of the study indicate that all the entities highlighted in Sūrat al-Naḥl for the purpose of drawing admonition consist of concrete elements that have a direct or indirect presence in human life. In particular, the emphasis on water and its vital importance for living beings, various examples drawn from plants, and the specific reference to bees among animals aim to encourage human beings to perceive the entities around them as signs (āyāt) and to reflect upon them consciously. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that the Qur’an invites human beings to view all celestial and terrestrial entities in the universe from the perspective of admonition, and through these entities to recognize the power, greatness, and majesty of God, thereby fostering a sense of submission befitting His divine grandeur.
