Abstract

This study investigates the consistency of artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems with expert evaluations in the assessment of visual landscape quality (VLQ). The VLQ evaluation method is structured based on nine main criteria widely used in landscape aesthetics literature (naturalness, harmony, maintenance, consistency, memorability, historicity, seasonality, visual scale, and degradation). Ten landscape photographs taken from the Düzce University campus and its surroundings were used as the sample area. These were evaluated by 10 expert participants and ChatGPT (GPT-4), which was configured to act as an “expert landscape architect,” and scored via a digital platform created in the Google AI Studio environment. Statistical analyses revealed a strong positive correlation (r > 0.75) between AI and expert scores across all criteria. The highest agreement was observed in the “Consistency” (r = 0.987) and ‘Distortion’ (r = 0.973) criteria, while a lower agreement was noted in the “Historicity” (r = 0.753) criterion. In conclusion, the results indicate that AI demonstrates high consistency with experts in perceiving formal and spatial order, while requiring expert interpretation for cultural and experiential criteria. These findings suggest that artificial intelligence holds the potential to serve as a fast and consistent decision-support system in landscape architecture.
