Abstract

This article aims to re-read Valentin Rasputin’s Live and Remember (Живи и помни) and Fakir Baykurt’un Irazca’nın Dirliği (Irazca’s Peace) not merely as social realist texts depicting rural life, but as narratives that construct the village as an affective community. From the perspectives of the sociology of emotions and affect theory, the study demonstrates that the social order is built through the circulation and regulation of emotions such as shame, honor, guilt, and fate. Within the scope of this analysis, it is emphasized that the spatial structure in the novella Live and Remember generates an emotional regime through ontological oppositions on the axis of 'self' and 'other,' where the Angara River and the Siberian forest serve as a threshold between the world of the living and the world of the outcasts. In the narratives of both authors, the village functions for individuals not only as a space indicating how they should behave but also as a normative structure where they learn how they should feel. In this context, shame and honor emerge as disciplinary emotions that define intra-community boundaries. Concepts such as guilt and fate reveal the ways in which individuals internalize social pressure at the levels of conscience and destiny. Furthermore, the article illustrates that female characters are at the center of this affective order; the emotional continuity of the community is maintained through the often invisible emotional labor undertaken by figures such as Nastyona and Irazca. Thus, by re-evaluating village novels from a perspective that examines the role of emotions in establishing social order, the study aims to provide a comparative literature-based contribution to the literature on affective communities.

Özet

Bu makale, Valentin Rasputin’in Yaşa ve Anımsa (Живи и помни) ve Fakir Baykurt’un Irazca’nın Dirliği eserlerini köy yaşamını betimleyen toplumcu gerçekçi metinler olmanın ötesinde, köyü bir duygulanımsal topluluk olarak kuran anlatılar şeklinde yeniden okumayı amaçlamaktadır.
