Abstract
Abstract: Hayreddin Goca, a prominent representative of Azerbaijani satirical literature in the post-independence period, employs humor in his short stories not merely as a means of entertainment but as an effective tool of social critique. Comprehensive studies on the satirical literature of this period remain limited, and Goca’s works have not yet been examined systematically from a theoretical perspective. In his stories, issues such as bureaucracy, corruption, social inequality, politics, economic difficulties, and the contradictions of everyday life are addressed through humor, satire, and black humor. The ridicule of authority figures, the inversion of social hierarchies, and the foregrounding of ordinary people’s perspectives contribute to the construction of a carnivalesque world within the narratives. In this respect, the stories stand out as texts that embed a powerful social critique beneath the surface of laughter. The humorous and comic elements in the stories are analyzed primarily within the framework of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the carnivalesque. In addition, Henri Bergson’s theory of laughter and Sigmund Freud’s views on the relationship between humor and the unconscious are also taken into consideration at the level of interpretation. The analysis focuses on key features of the carnivalesque, such as inversion, the ridicule of authority, the degradation of the elevated, the prominence of folk discourse, and parody. The analysis of the texts demonstrates that, in Goca’s stories, humor functions less as a source of amusement and more as a means of critical inquiry. Satire and black humor are employed to question and expose the flaws of the social order. In particular, the contrast between rich and poor, corruption, the degeneration of those in power, and social injustices are critically represented through a humorous narrative mode. In this sense, Goca’s stories can be regarded as narratives that bring together humor, satire, black humor, and carnivalesque elements to produce a form of social criticism mediated by laughter.
