Abstract

The need for fast, objective, and reliable classification systems in the quality control of agricultural products is increasing day by day. In this study, three different deep learning-based classification models EfficientNet, VGG16, and YOLO were compared for hazelnut quality classification. The dataset consisted of three classes, poor quality hazelnuts, shelled hazelnuts, and good quality hazelnuts, totaling 15,770 images. In the experimental process, the dataset was divided into training, validation, and independent test subsets; thus, model performances were evaluated on previously unseen test data. According to the results obtained, the EfficientNet model achieved an accuracy of 0.9718 in the independent test set, the VGG16 model achieved an accuracy of 0.9835, and the YOLO model achieved an accuracy of 0.9987. When the confusion matrices were examined, it was observed that in the EfficientNet and VGG16 models, errors were mainly concentrated between the poor quality and good quality hazelnut classes, while only a very limited number of misclassifications occurred in the YOLO model. The findings show that all three models were successful in hazelnut quality classification, but the highest performance in terms of both overall accuracy and class-specific error minimization was achieved by the YOLO model. In conclusion, it has been demonstrated that deep learning-based approaches can be effectively used in automated hazelnut quality control, and that YOLO-based classification, in particular, offers a powerful solution to this problem.
