Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between traumatic birth perception and postpartum maternal blues among women who had given birth, and to identify the factors influencing this condition. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between February and August 2025 with postpartum women who were followed in the obstetrics outpatient clinics and obstetrics wards of Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University Health Practice and Research Hospital. The sample consisted of 406 postpartum women who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using the Descriptive Characteristics Form, the Traumatic Birth Perception Scale (TBPS), and the Suryani Maternal Blues Scale (SMBS). Results: The participants' mean total TBPS score was 73.00±27.68, while the mean total SMBS score was 56.06±16.80. There was a positive, moderate, and statistically significant correlation between the total TBPS and SMBS scores (r=0.353; p<0.001). Traumatic birth perception was determined to be the strongest predictor of maternal grief (β=0.348; p<0.001). Caesarean section (β=0.168; p<0.001), exclusive formula feeding (β=0.153; p=0.001), negative birth experience (β=0.108; p=0.017) and admission of the newborn to intensive care (β=0.093; p=0.044) were also found to have a significant effect on maternal sadness. Conclusion: Perceived traumatic birth was found to be the strongest predictor of maternal blues. Caesarean section, exclusive formula feeding, negative birth experience, and neonatal intensive care requirements are also factors that increase maternal blues. Identifying high-risk groups in the early postpartum period and providing psychosocial support are important for preventing maternal blues.
