Abstract
This research was conducted to examine the importance of breath control and breathing exercises during the performance of long musical phrases in Turkish folk music. The correct and aesthetic performance of long-sustained phrases, which are frequently encountered especially in genres such as bozlak, uzun hava (long tune), and hoyrat, depends on the performer’s breath control skills. The study investigated the problems that folk music performers and students experience in breath usage, the effects of breathing exercises on performance, and the level of breath technique instruction in music education. The study employed a case study design from qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of five professional folk music artists and five conservatory students determined through purposive sampling method. Data were collected using semi-structured interview forms and observation forms, and analyzed using descriptive analysis method.Research findings revealed that breath insufficiency and uncontrolled breath usage are the main problems in performing long musical phrases. Participants reported experiencing problems such as incomplete phrases due to not using diaphragmatic breathing, deterioration in voice quality, and rapid fatigue during performance. A significant improvement was observed in the performance of participants who practiced regular breathing exercises, and it was found that they could perform long phrases more fluently and without fatigue. It was determined that breath control is not only a technical requirement but also has critical importance in the aesthetic interpretation of musical phrases and conveying the emotional intensity of the piece. However, it was observed that insufficient attention is given to teaching breathing techniques in folk music education programs, and this situation negatively affects students’ performances. In conclusion, breath control and regular breathing exercises are indispensable elements for the successful performance of long phrases in Turkish folk music. The research demonstrates the necessity of systematically teaching breathing techniques in music education programs, raising educators’ awareness on this subject, and encouraging performers to practice regular breathing exercises. Improvements made in line with these recommendations will provide significant contributions both to increasing performance quality and preserving the artistic value of folk music.
