Abstract
This study examines the social and economic origins of therapeutic culture, which developed in Turkey in parallel with the neoliberal transformation after 1980, from a sociological perspective. The research is conceptual and theoretical in nature, based on a literature review method. In this study, theoretical and empirical sources are systematically evaluated to discuss the position of therapeutic language within the neoliberal governance’s strategies for transforming the subject. Foucault’s conceptualization of governance and biopolitics, Illouz’s theory of emotional capitalism, Han’s analysis of psychopolitics, and Davies’ critique of the happiness industry form the theoretical framework of the research. The processes of individualizing structural problems and reducing social contradictions to a psychological framework are analyzed within the Turkish context. The findings show that therapeutic culture is based on class foundations and holds a significant place within the reproduction strategies of the middle classes. In conclusion, it is argued that therapeutic orientation produces the forms of subjectivity required by capitalism’s new accumulation regime. Because the study does not rely on empirical data collection, it offers conceptual mapping and theoretical synthesis, but it lays an important foundation for future research.
