Abstract

Introduction: TENS is a non-invasive electroanalgesia method used to relieve various pains. TENS is increasingly used by nurses due to its dependability and affordability, in addition to its positive effects on patient outcomes. Aim: This study was conducted to examine postgraduate nursing theses on TENS application in Turkey. Method: The National Thesis Center Database of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) was used for scanning. The keywords "transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation," "transcutaneous electrical nerve impluse," and "TENS" were scanned between June 2023 and July 2023, without any year range selected. As a result of the screening, 896 theses regarding TENS application were reached. Since 887 of the theses examined were not relevant to the field of nursing, 2 were not fully accessible, and 1 was conducted with experimental animals, 890 theses were excluded and 6 theses were included in the study. Results: The data was analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 package program. 50% of the thesis that are part of the study were doctoral theses, and the remaining 50% were master's theses. When the distribution by departments was examined, it was determined that the majority of theses were written in the field of surgical nursing, followed by public health nursing, basic nursing principles, and general nursing. It can be seen that the theses examined were made in the last ten years and were generally conducted in a randomized controlled study with an experimental design. Conclusion: It was observed that the findings of the theses included in the research were mostly similar to the findings of other studies in the literature. As a result, TENS use has been determined to be an effective non-invasive intervention on care outcomes such as reducing pain levels and analgesic use amounts, enhancing respiratory functions, and increasing patient satisfaction. Further research is required to advance the use of TENS in the field of nursing in our country and contribute to the related literature.
