Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic period has been a process during which significant practices were implemented, and outcomes were experienced in the maritime sector. During this time, various impacts on maritime markets were observed. Freight markets experienced a rapidly rising freight rate trend during the transition from the pre-pandemic period to the early months of the pandemic due to intensified demand and uncertainty. However, in the post-pandemic period, they faced sharp declines. This study analyzed the freight rate fluctuations over a five-year period, covering the pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic phases, using dry bulk and container freight index data. The relationships between the index values were revealed. The study identified the relationship between the dry bulk index and the container freight index and made inferences based on these findings. Additionally, the study examined the relationship between the container freight index and major sub-indices of the dry bulk index. Thus, it was determined to what extent the container freight index was related to which sub-indices and inferences were made regarding this.
