Abstract

This study examines the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on marital life and family structure. A sample of 390 women aged 18-45 who visited the hospital between January and May 2022 and agreed to participate in the research was selected. This cross-sectional study utilized the Revised Couple Adaptation Scale, the Family Assessment Scale and a descriptive questionnaire form. For data analysis, t-test and ANOVA were applied, and Tukey's Test (Post Hoc test) was used to identify groups with significant differences after ANOVA. Pearson correlation test was conducted to explore the relationship between the two scales. The study revealed that 90.8% of women experienced difficulties coping with social isolation and changes in daily routines at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Factors such as stress, fear, feelings of burnout, and having children during the pandemic were found to negatively impact family structure and marital life (p<0.05). Additionally, it was found that factors such as mutual support between spouses, solidarity, strong family communication, and supporting women with the increased household workload were significant in maintaining family balance and positively influencing marital life (p<0.05). In conclusion, it was determined that the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative effect on family structure and marital life.
