Abstract

This study examines how German everyday culture is represented in the textbooks “Menschen A1.1“ (2022) and “Menschen A1.2“ (2023), drawing on the sociocultural requirements of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (GER) as well as the thematic areas defined in the nationwide orientation guide „Eine Orientierungshilfe für das Leben in Deutschland“. Based on the assumption that communicative competence remains incomplete without fundamental cultural orientation knowledge (Kramsch, 1993, S. 1; Byram, 1997, S. 22), a qualitative content analysis following Kuckartz (2014, S. 77–100) was conducted. All texts, images, tasks, and scene-based activities in the textbooks were coded both deductively and inductively and systematically compared with the everyday-life themes specified in the reference documents. The findings reveal that the textbooks present core A1-relevant cultural domains—such as greetings, family, food, housing, leisure activities, and celebrations—in a visually accessible and linguistically low-threshold manner. However, noticeable gaps emerge in culturally significant areas that are highly relevant for newcomers in their daily lives. These include Sunday as a “day of rest“ waste-separation practices, the deposit-bottle system (Pfand), and fundamental procedures of public transportation, such as ticket types, operating ticket machines, and validating tickets. Although all of these topics could easily be integrated at the A1 level, they remain entirely absent from the textbooks. These omissions point to substantial didactic potential: visually diverse and everyday-oriented digital materials—such as realistic photographs, image sequences, infographics, short explanatory videos, and comic-style mini-scenarios—can support the action-oriented and accessible teaching of missing cultural content. The study thus provides a theoretical and empirical foundation for developing supplementary digital cultural modules within the scope of the planned doctoral project.
