Abstract

Mount Ağrı (Ararat) and its surroundings constitute one of the most remarkable tourism destinations in Türkiye due to their geomorphological characteristics, high mountain ecosystem, cultural heritage assets, and particularly the belief dimension associated with the narrative of Noah’s Flood. Despite this significant potential, the limited share of tourism revenues indicates that these resources have not been utilized effectively and sustainably. This study aims to analyze the tourism potential of Mount Ağrı and its surroundings within the framework of mountain tourism and faith tourism, and to propose strategic recommendations for sustainable tourism development. A qualitative research methodology was employed, including document analysis, literature review, and spatial evaluation of available data. In addition, the tourism potential of the region was evaluated through a SWOT analysis framework focusing on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The findings reveal that Mount Ağrı stands out not only for its physical geographical features but also for its potential to become a globally recognized faith tourism destination. However, deficiencies in infrastructure, insufficient promotion, service quality issues, and the perceived security risks have limited tourism development. Furthermore, the concentration of tourism activities in specific seasons and routes increases environmental pressures on the fragile mountain ecosystem. To sustainably develop tourism in and around Mount Ararat, it is necessary to prepare a Mount Ararat and Surrounding Areas Tourism Master Plan, implement planned tourism policies, adopt a destination management approach, strengthen tourism infrastructure for accommodation, transportation, camping areas and visitor services, evaluate natural and cultural resources within a balance of conservation and utilization, and more effectively involve the local population in tourism processes. In this context, it has been concluded that Mount Ararat should be considered within the framework of an international-scale destination model that integrates mountain tourism with religious tourism.
