Abstract

Umbilical infections (omphalitis) are among the most commonly encountered diseases in newborn calves, following gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and practices of cattle farmers in Bingol Province regarding umbilical infections in calves, and to examine the relationship between their level of knowledge and preventive care practices. The presented study was conducted between January 2023 and 2024 with 120 cattle breeders operating in Bingol city center and villages connected to the center. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire prepared by the researchers and analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0. 55.9% of the farmers were aware of the umbilical cord care procedure, 72.3% tied the umbilical cord, 61.9% disinfected the umbilical cord with iodine solutions, 96.7% provided colostrum post-birth, and 86.7% administered at least 2 litres of colostrum in the first an hour. It was found that farmers with knowledge of umbilical care carried out umbilical cord tying and disinfection practices to a significantly greater extent (p<0.001); furthermore, a significant association was identified between the regular addition of clean bedding to calf pens and the reported occurrence of umbilical infections (p=0.005). Consequently, a combined assessment of farmers’ knowledge, attitudes and practices is important for the wider adoption of preventive measures against umbilical infections, the improvement of hygiene standards and the planning of effective training programmes.
