Abstract

This study aims to examine, within a comprehensive framework, sustainability-oriented regulations developed by international and regional authorities in response to the current environmental responsibilities of air transport, as well as existing practices and associated challenges. The subject is addressed through a document analysis method in the contexts of energy and fuel efficiency, measurement and reporting of carbon emissions, use of sustainable aviation fuels, waste management, noise control, and environmental monitoring. The findings indicate that regulatory frameworks established by authorities play a crucial role in achieving sustainability objectives. In particular, global and national aviation authorities are observed to have a decisive influence in the areas of carbon emissions management, sustainable aviation fuel production capacity, energy efficiency, and environmental reporting. It is evident that sustainability requires a broad transformation encompassing aircraft design, fuel technologies, airport operations, and overall operational efficiency. The increasing scope, expansion, and diffusion of regulatory measures are steering the sector toward a lower-carbon, more resilient, and environmentally responsible structure. Furthermore, the sustainability transition within the sector is understood to be based on multidimensional factors, including technology, policy, financing and investment, and inter-stakeholder cooperation.
