Abstract

Sustainable tourism is of great importance for sustainable development and is considered as a prerequisite for the attraction factor in the sector not to disappear. Tourists, who are accepted as important stakeholders of tourism, are seen to have a leading role in sustainability, and it is observed that they exhibit reluctant attitudes and behaviours towards the consumption of non-sustainable products. However, demographic characteristics of tourists differentiate the level of this reluctance. Especially the difference in age was found to be more significant than other demographic characteristics. This attitude and behaviour of tourists regarding age is also important in terms of the type of tourism they purchase. This study was conducted theoretically in order to reveal the awareness levels of young and adult tourists of the concept of sustainability, which has occupied the recent history of the world. In particular, the study assumes that individuals' awareness levels may change with environmental stimuli and that this awareness will be reflected in their consumption.
