Abstract

Damage caused by biological agents such as insects, microorganisms, and rodents is widely observed in books worldwide. Manuscripts and limited-edition rare printed works, in particular, are regarded as cultural heritage materials and require specialized expertise for their preservation and maintenance due to their historical, artistic, and scientific significance. The transmission of these works to future generations depends on the establishment of appropriate environmental conditions, regular monitoring, and the implementation of preventive conservation measures. In the past, pest control in libraries relied heavily on various chemical methods and fumigation practices involving toxic gases. However, because these methods were found to damage collection materials and pose risks to human health and the environment, they have gradually been replaced by safer approaches. In recent years, sustainable strategies emphasizing preventive measures rather than direct intervention have been increasingly adopted in pest management practices. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a holistic approach that does not rely on a single control method but instead consists of a coordinated set of programs, including prevention, regular monitoring, risk assessment, environmental control, hygiene and maintenance practices, staff training, and, when necessary, minimal intervention. Its primary objective is to prevent pest occurrence through proactive measures and systematic monitoring, thereby establishing a sustainable pest control system. This review study examines the biological agents that cause damage to books and other collection materials in libraries housing rare works, as well as the methods used to combat these agents and current approaches in the field. It discusses the applicability of IPM programs in library environments, their contribution to the preservation of rare collections, and their advantages compared to chemical methods. The study aims to evaluate the role of Integrated Pest Management in the long-term preservation of cultural heritage.
