Abstract

This study, titled “An Examination of the Phenomenon of Dreams within the Framework of Psychological Theories,” approaches dreams not merely as a neurophysiological output, but as a multidimensional experiential realm that contains significant insights into an individual’s inner world and subjective experience. The primary aim of this study is to examine the subjective meaning and clinical function of the dream experience from a comparative perspective, drawing on the neurobiological foundations of dreams and within the frameworks of psychoanalytic and phenomenological approaches. In this systematic literature review, which employs the document analysis technique—one of the qualitative research methods—the data have been synthesized under three main themes: the neurobiological background, psychoanalytic approaches, and phenomenological approaches. Neurobiological findings indicate that dreams are particularly associated with REM sleep and play an active role in processes of learning, memory, and emotional regulation. In the section on psychoanalytic theories, the views of Freud—who saw dreams as a pathway to the unconscious—Adler—who viewed them as a preparation for the future—and Jung—who treated them as a symbolic expression of the collective unconscious—are analyzed. Additionally, the relational, linguistic, and reparative perspectives on dreams offered by second-generation theorists (Bowlby, Fromm, Lacan, Winnicott, Klein, Ferenczi) are examined, emphasizing the functions of dreams in psychological repair and creativity. In the section on phenomenological approaches, the discussion focuses on how Gestalt therapy, the client-centered approach, and the existential perspective position dreams within the “here and now” framework, emphasizing the client’s subjective experience and the process of integration. The study concluded that dreams are both a biological necessity and a meaningful mental process that bridges the past, present, and future. It emphasized the importance of addressing dream work within the therapeutic process using a holistic approach that takes into account the client’s individual needs and theoretical flexibility. Keywords: Dreams, Psychotherapy and Dreams, Phenomenological Psychology and Dreams, Psychodynamic Approaches, REM Sleep.
