Abstract

This study bibliometrically reviews the literature on complications associated with non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) applications over the period 2000–2025. NIMV is an effective respiratory support method that reduces respiratory workload, improves gas exchange, and contributes to preventing complications associated with invasive ventilation. However, complications such as mask-related skin lesions, air leakage, patient intolerance, barotrauma, aspiration, and gastrointestinal distension can limit treatment success. In this study, data obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database were analyzed using Excel 2016, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace software; a total of 1205 publications with contributions from 833 corresponding authors from 65 countries were evaluated. The findings show that the number of publications has increased significantly, especially in recent years. The most prolific country is the United States, with Massimo Antonelli as the most prolific author, and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine was identified as the most central journal in the field in co-citation analysis. Keyword analysis revealed that the literature focuses on clinical themes such as non-invasive ventilation, acute respiratory failure, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). From a nursing care perspective, the findings clearly highlight the central role of nurses in NIMV applications. Specifically, interface (mask) management, maintaining skin integrity, preventing pressure injuries, and early complication identification stand out as critical care components. Improving patient tolerance, comfort, anxiety management, and adherence to treatment are key focus areas for nursing interventions. Monitoring risk factors such as prolonged NIMV duration, low Braden score, and low albumin levels is important in preventing complications. Furthermore, it is noted that complementary care approaches (relaxation techniques, therapeutic touch, etc.) can improve patient comfort. The findings indicate that NIMV complications are mostly considered as secondary outcome variables, and that standard care protocols in this area are limited. In conclusion, evidence-based care algorithms and monitoring protocols developed under nurse leadership will be crucial in reducing complications and increasing treatment success.
