Abstract
This study deals with the historical and religious position of Shith b. Adam, who is mentioned in Islamic historiography as the son of Adam, in a comparative manner. The research aims to combine both historiography and the history of religions perspectives with an interdisciplinary approach, seeking to analyse the historical function and intellectual background of the narratives. The identity of Shith, who is not mentioned in the Qur’an but is regarded as a prophet in hadith and historical literature, has been shaped around the concepts of revelation, lineage, will, and ‘light’. When tracing the chronological narrative of Shith in the works of Muslim historians living in the early period, between the 3rd/9th and 4th/10th centuries, it is seen that Shith is presented as a functional element for both the continuation of the human lineage and the continuity of divine knowledge. While the subject is covered with varying degrees of intensity in the relevant historical works, the information about Shith’s prophethood, the pages scrolls revealed to him, and the continuation of the human lineage from him is generally supported by accounts from Israiliyat sources. In Jewish-Christian literature, however, apart from mentioning Shith as a biological continuation of the lineage, there is no mention of his prophethood or the giving of a book to him. This figure is presented in Jewish apocryphal texts as a saviour who enables God’s name to be mentioned again on earth, and in Gnostic traditions as a metaphysical being. The study examines how these narratives are adapted to the Islamic context and how historical and theological representations are transformed. Consequently, the story of Shith is evaluated not merely as a prophet’s tale, but as a symbolic cornerstone that underpins the concept of sacred lineage and the continuity of revelation in Islamic historiography. In this context, the study is based on comparative historiography and intertextual analysis methods; it evaluates the narratives in terms of their theological and epistemological functions rather than their claims to historical accuracy, and in this respect, it differs from studies in the literature.
Özet
Bu çalışma, İslam tarih yazıcılığında Hz. Adem’in oğlu olarak geçen Şîs b. İlgili tarih eserlerinde konu farklı yoğunluklarda yer bulurken, Şis’in peygamberliği, kendisine sahife verilmesi ve insanlığın soyunun ondan devam ettiği yönündeki bilgiler genellikle İsrâiliyât kaynaklı rivayetlerle desteklenmektedir.
