Abstract

This study aims to comparatively evaluate timber-based Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) systems against conventional reinforced concrete structures in terms of earthquake safety, energy efficiency, and sustainability criteria. In the research, six different panel combinations were produced using stone wool, glass wool, and EPS foam as insulation materials, and OSB and cement-bonded particleboard (betopan) as facing materials. Thermal conductivity and fire resistance tests were conducted on these combinations. According to the test results, the lowest thermal conductivity value was obtained in EPS foam-filled panels (~0.66 W/m·K), while the highest fire resistance was achieved in panels containing stone wool (31.2 mm). Despite its high insulation capacity, EPS foam is recommended only for low-risk structures due to its poor fire performance. Cost analysis revealed that SIP systems offer approximately 13% lower costs and up to 80% shorter construction times compared to reinforced concrete structures. Literature data on seismic performance indicate that timber panels stand out with their high ductility, controlled deformation, and effective energy dissipation capacity. Furthermore, when integrated with photovoltaic panels and air-source heat pumps, SIP systems can provide energy-independent housing solutions with a low carbon footprint. In conclusion, SIP panel systems combine rapid production, low cost, high insulation and fire resistance, earthquake safety, and environmental sustainability, making them an innovative and applicable construction approach, particularly in earthquake-prone regions
