Abstract

Despite the increasing emphasis on clean energy and green technology in the sustainability literature, empirical evidence on the time-varying causal relationship between these two domains remains limited, particularly in the post–COVID-19 period. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to investigate the causal relationship between clean energy and green technology using daily data covering the period from 2 January 2020 to 2 October 2025, within the framework of the time-varying Granger causality approach developed by Shi et al. (2018, 2020) and by employing the recursive evolving window method. The findings show that causality from clean energy to green technology emerges at the 5% significance level only during certain subperiods, indicating that this relationship does not exhibit a stable and persistent structure throughout the entire sample. In contrast, no statistically significant time-varying causality is found from green technology to clean energy. These results suggest that, in the post-pandemic period, clean energy plays a periodically triggering role for green technologies, while this effect varies over time and depending on conditions.
