Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, etiology.treatment and complication of deep neck infections.Material and Methods: 106 patients who were diagnosed as having deep neck infections in our clinic from 2004 to 2015 were reviewed retrospectively. Symptoms, etiology, location of the abscess, treatment, complication and duration of hospitalization of the patients were analysed. Results: Patients' age ranged between 8 to 80 years old, mean age was 32.6. 64 of 106 patients were male, 42 were female. Dental infection (n=53; 50%) was the most common etiologic cause. The subman-dibular space was the most common location (n=56; 52.8%) followed by the peritonsillar abscess( n=41, 38.6%). Parotid space was the third location (0.6%). The most common presenting symptoms were loca-lized pain (n=85; 80.1%), neck swelling (n=79;74.5%), odynophagia(n=42; 39.6%) and trismus (n=26; 24.5%). Mean hospitalization time was 9.8 days. Des-cending mediastinitis with empyema was observed in a patient as severe complication. Conclusion: Deep neck space infection may cause se-vere complication, so, needs agressive treatment. In-fection source should be examined meticulously and these patients should be hospitalized.
