Abstract
Geography, which examines the relationship between humans and space, is a branch of science that considers the location of a battlefield, the relief, climate, water, and vegetation of the area where it took place, as well as the effects of human characteristics such as population, settlement, transportation, and economic activities on the course and outcome of the war. In this article, the subject is limited to the physical structure of the Malazgirt Plain, and its effects are examined in relatively detail using historical and current data and information. Thus, the aim is to outline the spatial and event patterns of the battle. In this regard, primary historical sources, primarily Michael Attaleiates, field observations conducted between 2020-2022, and at various scales maps and satellite photographs have been extensively utilized. The rugged structure of the Malazgirt Plain, shaped by volcanic activity and essentially a plateau, was unsuitable for the battle plans that Romanos Diogenes intended to implement. Indeed, thanks to the relief, communication and synchronization among the Byzantine troops could not be achieved on August 26th, the day the battle ended, despite all the Emperor's efforts. Conversely, the same relief provided significant advantages to the light and mobile Seljuk cavalry units. It is evident that Sultan Alp Arslan understood the geography of the plain well, utilized it tactically, and achieved a great victory.
