Abstract
This article examines the religious legitimation of royal authority in Old Babylon and analyses the institutional and ideological mechanisms through which the religious legitimacy of kingship was constructed. The study aims to demonstrate that, particularly during the reign of Hammurabi, royal authority was systematically institutionalized by grounding it in divine will. In this context, royal ideology, the legal system, temple structures, and ritual practices are examined in order to analyse how political power was produced and maintained through religious discourse. The study draws primarily on the Code of Hammurabi and written sources belonging to the Old Babylonian period and interprets them in light of modern historical and theoretical scholarship. The findings indicate that the rise of Marduk to a central position within the Babylonian pantheon was directly connected to political centralization and ideologically legitimized through the discourse of divine authority. It was further determined that the administrative and economic functions of temples, together with public rituals such as the Akitu Festival, continuously reproduced the king’s divine legitimacy. The article discusses the structural integration of religion, law, and politics from the perspective of the History of Religions.
