Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to examine the economic and ecological feasibility of industrial hemp cultivation, its sustainable use in the paper industry, and current research on the subject. Hemp (Cannabis) a member of the Cannabaceae family, is commonly known in Turkey as "esrar otu" or "dürrü" and is a versatile industrial crop. With a wide range of applications in fields such as food, construction, bioplastics, energy, cosmetics, and textiles, hemp offers an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative. Its potential, particularly in paper production, makes it an important option for industries seeking sustainable materials. Research findings show that hemp fibers require less water and energy consumption compared to traditional wood-based paper production. Additionally, hemp's rapid growth cycle enhances agricultural productivity and contributes to the preservation of forests. In this context, promoting hemp in sustainable agricultural practices, improving relevant legal regulations, and increasing the market acceptance of hemp-based products are essential. A better understanding of hemp’s economic and environmental benefits should be supported through collaboration between industry and academia.
