Abstract

In Turkey, mountainous and highly sloped areas are at serious risk due to frequent avalanche disasters. Avalanche control projects play a vital role in minimizing these risks and preventing loss of life and property. Especially in rural areas, the participation of local people in the projects is necessary to make the projects sustainable and to increase social awareness. In this article, the preparation processes of avalanche control projects in Turkey are discussed in detail with the example of Aktaş Village in Adaklı district of Bingöl province. In the prepared project, structural measures are proposed to minimize the possible damages of an avalanche disaster. The implementation of these projects in avalanche-prone areas in Turkey is considered as a critical step for the safety of the people living in the region. Avalanche control projects and implementations should gain momentum in order to reduce the avalanche events that cause loss of life almost every year and to minimize the damages.
