Abstract

In this study, a machine learning-based grade prediction model was developed using individual and environmental factors that affect students' academic performance. The study utilized a dataset consisting of 6,607 examples, including variables such as study time, class attendance rate, sleep duration, previous academic achievement, peer influence, and learning difficulties. Linear Regression, Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbor, Support Vector Machines, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting algorithms were compared in practice. The hyperparameters of the applied models were optimized using GridSearch and Optuna. The performance of the applied algorithms was evaluated using MSE, RMSE, MAE, MAPE, and R² metrics. The experimental results showed that Linear Regression and SVM had the highest prediction accuracy with an R² of 0.99. The findings indicate that machine learning models are effective in predicting students' academic performance and can contribute to the development of personalized education strategies.
